Meg White is a drummer who is known for being in the group "The White Stripes" with her then husband Jack White. She was born December 10th, 1974 in Grosse Pointe Farms, Michigan. White grew up in Michigan and stayed there after finishing high school, working as a bartender at Memphis Smoke in a Detroit suburb. It was there that she met John Anthony Gillis. They eventually got married on September 21st, 1996. Gillis broke tradition by taking on his wife's surname of White and thus became known as Jack White.
Even though Jack had been playing with bands through the 1990s, Meg didn't start playing music until 1997. That is when she picked up drumsticks and tried to play the drums. She loved the instrument and said playing felt liberating. Because of Meg's late start in drumming and informal musical education, she developed a simple but intriguing style of playing that became her characteristic. The husband and wife formed a group together which they called "The White Stripes". Meg White apparently loves peppermints which is where the idea for the stripe part of the name comes from. Meg and Jack divorced in 2000 but they still stayed together to perform in the "White Stripes". By 2003, the band had become famous and seemed to be everywhere: on the Billboard charts, making guest appearances on shows like "The Simpsons", and on the covers of magazines.
At first, the relationship between Meg and Jack was kept secret. It was first thought that they were brother and sister and then that they were married. Jack later posted a copy of their marriage and divorce certificate online. Meg White is a very shy person and her problems with anxiety forced her to cancel several tour dates in 2007. She also enjoys taxidermy and photography as hobbies.
